Daniel de St. Leu, Watchmaker to Her Majesty, London, No. 3110, made for the Islamic Market, circa 1815. Very fine and rare 18K gold pair-cased, diamond and gem-set, quarter striking clock watch.

C. Outer double body, the diamond-set bezels chased with varicoloured gold floral decoration, the back applied with a diamond set pattern of flowers and foliage, an emerald-set crescent and a diamond-set star centred with an emerald over a matted ground. Inner double body, "bassine", the back pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage and flowers, a ruby cabochon set on the pendant_ D. White enamel with Turkish numerals. Diamond-set fancy hands. M. giltbrass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain gold three-arm balance, gilt-brass cock pierced and engraved with scrolling foliage. Striking on a hell, with strike-silent selection lever on the bezel. Gilt-brass dust-cap. Signed on the dial, the dust-cap and the back plate. Diam. 60mm.

This watch in remarkable by the size and the quality of the gems. DE SAINT LED, Daniel He made watches both Inc the English and the Eastern export markets. Watchmaker to George III and Queen Charlotte from 1765 onwards; in 1753 he was established in Cloak Lane at `The Golden i-lead'. Later he was at 38 Cornhill and was succeeded about 1790 by Rivers & Son.
