Notes

This snuff-box, punched “G T”, is made by a workshop still undetermined today but probably active in Hanau, Hessen, in Germany; although longtime considered as a Genevan goldsmith’s workshop. This centre of goldsmith production is known for its relations with Geneva; numerous commercial exchanges, employment contracts, orders and marriages bind the two cities. If the work of goldsmithing is certainly German, the enamel painting was most likely done in Geneva. The Lissignol’s workshop is one of those that can be cited as the author of this miniature.
