Notes

James Rosenquist, “Elapse, Eclipse, Ellipse” Over the past half century, American artist James Rosenquist, born in 1933, has offered a powerful visual commentary on post-modern society. His art has been said to “reshape perceptions of time and space to complete an alternative view of reality." Rosenquist’s design titled “Elapse, Eclipse, Ellipse,” was commissioned for the Movado Artists’ Series in 1991. This most unusual wristwatch, with its free-form case and three dials that appear almost to be melting into one another, suggests a tri-view of the earth from distant space. The timepiece is constructed on three levels, with three independent mechanical movements, to report the time in three separate time zones. Its three freeflowing dials are covered by a single convex sapphire crystal.
