Leukemia Society of America Cindy Crawford, Jeff Gordon, Bebe Neuwirth, Mark O'Meara This year the Leukemia Society of America is celebrating its 50th anniversary as a not-for profit, voluntary health agency dedicated to seeking the cure of leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin' s disease and Myeloma and improving the quality of life for all patients. The Society focuses its resources on the development of six major programs: research, patient aid, public and professional education, advocacy, and community service. Since its establishment, the Leukemia Society has invested more than $145 million in research grants to physicians and scientists who are affiliated at accredited institutions in the United States and throughout the world. It is important to note that many of the modern lifesaving methods of treating other forms of cancers were pioneered directly as a result of leukemia research. These include 40 drugs that kill _ malignant cells, development of antibiotics and anti-viral drugs to treat infections, improved radiotherapy, transplantational medicine, improvements in the treatment of graft versus host disease, as well as blood cell replacement therapy. New horizons are leading the Society into the development of immunotherapy and gene therapy for treatment of leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. improvement although there is a great deal to accomplish. Society Researchers will not be satisfied until survival rates for leukemia and related cancers reach 100%. The Leukemia Society of America looks forward to the day when leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma are relegated in history books along with polio, leprosy, and smallpox.
