Notes

It is interesting to note that the coat-of-arms, flanked by two supporters, a standing (rampant) lion and a standing (rampant) unicorn, surmounted by a closed royal crown (crest), stamped on the plate of the movement bears in English, in addition to the mention “Pateck Geneva”, the names “India and China”. The coat-of-arms is strangely reminiscent of that of the Kingdom of Great Britain, so that the customer may think that this brand is an official supplier to that country and the other two mentioned.

It is quite obvious that all this is a lowly mercantile deception making the natives of distant countries believe that this watch is produced by the manufacture Patek, Philippe & Co., founded in Geneva in 1839, which at the time of the creation of this watch with its apocryphal signature already enjoyed a great reputation.

From that time onwards, the directors of the honourable Genevan factory took legal action against these counterfeiters, in particular the Armand Schwob & Frères company of La Chaux-de-Fonds, who had the audacity to present a watch signed “Pateck à Genève” at the 1885 Universal Exhibition in Antwerp; the jury discovered it on July 9 during the inspection of the showcases of the firm from the Neuchâtel mountains. A trial followed which lasted 20 years.
