Notes

The present example stands as a singular masterpiece, a harmonious convergence of groundbreaking technology and centuries-old decorative artistry. More than a timepiece, it is an elegant and exquisite sculpture, its form and function telling a story of mid-century ambition and timeless craftsmanship. The clock’s very existence is rooted in a pioneering chapter of Patek Philippe’s history. In 1948, the manufacturer established a dedicated Electronics Division, this venture yielded a landmark achievement in 1950: the world’s first timepiece capable of winding itself through exposure to light. The design of these early solar clocks, including the present example, is architecturally evocative, their domed silhouettes reminiscent of the cathedrals and churches that grace the European landscape. Beneath this iconic dome lies a dial of breathtaking beauty, setting this particular clock apart as a truly unique creation. It features a stunning «Birds in Paillonné”scene, rendered not in the more widely known cloisonné enamel, but in the exceptionally rare paillonné technique. This intricate art involves meticulously hand-cutting and etching tiny gold pieces into various forms; these delicate gold spangles are then artfully embedded between layers of transparent enamel to create a scene of luminous depth. In the present example, three peacocks are framed by a lush wreath of leaves, creating a captivating interplay of light and brilliance as the gold shimmers through the vibrant blue background. It encapsulates the innovative spirit of Patek Philippe’s 20th-century quest for horological progress, while its case celebrates the pinnacle of traditional metiers d’art. A testament to both technical ingenuity and sublime artistry, it remains a peerless and coveted treasure.
