THE LEGENDARY WATCH OF THE LEGENDARY WATCHMAKER REAPPEARED ON THE MARKET

The steel version of the Patek Philippe Chronograph Ref. 1463 with an asthmometer dial is a truly extraordinary timepiece that carries a rich history. Completed in the 1950s, this watch was meticulously crafted by the legendary watchmaker Jacques Golay. At the time, Golay was working as a régleur in the esteemed atelier of Fils de Victorin-Piguet, a part of the prestigious Patek Philippe group of companies.

Régleurs in the 1950s, like Golay, were highly skilled artisans who possessed the ability to assemble, adjust mechanical watches to unparalleled levels of accuracy. The ensured accuracy, calibrated movements and possessed expertise in complications. This particular Ref. 1463 was made in the Patek Philippe manufacture and intended for Golay’s personal use, explaining why it is encased in steel rather than a precious metal. The combination of the steel case and asthmometer dial makes this timepiece truly one-of-a-kind.

It’s worth noting that the case of this watch does not bear a serial number. This is because Golay crafted it for his own personal enjoyment, rather than for commercial sale.

Accompanying this exceptional watch is a handwritten letter, signed by Jacques Golay’s son, which serves as irrefutable proof of its origin. This letter adds a personal touch and further enhances the watch’s provenance.

In 2012, the watch was sold at the November Antiquorum Geneva auction for the impressive price of CHF 194,500 and has been impeccably preserved by the same buyer since then. The re-appearance of this remarkable timepiece in the market presents a rare opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to own a cherished piece of horological history.
