Notes

An exceptional example of the highly coveted mid-size Nautilus, this Patek Philippe reference 3800 stands out for its striking and extremely sought-after blue sigma dial exhibiting a distinctive green hue, a fascinating and collectible chromatic evolution observed only on select early dials from the first years of production. The tonal shift, visible under natural light, gives the dial a depth and character that enthusiast collectors prize as one of the most charismatic variations within the reference.

Introduced in 1981, the Nautilus 3800 extended the design language established by Gérald Genta with the original 3700, translating the iconic porthole case and horizontally embossed dial into a more compact and versatile size. Early examples such as this one share many of the most desirable aesthetic traits of the first-generation Nautilus: thinner profile, first-series dial typography, black date, and elegant applied gold hour markers with sigma signature (“σ T SWISS T σ”), attesting to the use of precious metal on the dial furniture.

The present watch is preserved in beautiful condition, with its stainless-steel case retaining clean, strong lines and the integrated bracelet maintaining excellent articulation. The mesmerizing dial shifting from deep marine blue to rich petrol-green depending on light and angle is a hallmark of early Nautilus production, the result of original finishing techniques no longer used today.

Powered by the ultra-thin calibre 335 SC, the movement combines refined technical architecture with the everyday practicality of a central seconds hand, a key evolution from the earlier 3700. Its mechanical performance remains exemplary and stands as a testament to Patek Philippe’s mastery of slim high-grade automatic watchmaking.

Adding considerable importance to this piece is the presence of its original 1983 certificate, documenting early-era provenance and greatly enhancing collectability. Complete papered examples of this rarity and visual distinction continue to gain recognition among connoisseurs seeking the finest historic Nautilus executions.

The convergence of traits seen here early production, steel execution, blue-to-green sigma dial positions this 3800 in a highly desirable upper tier of the reference. A finely preserved and beautifully characterful Nautilus, offering both the unmistakable presence of Genta’s design philosophy and the scarcity factor that drives today’s most discerning collectors.

A superb opportunity to acquire a rare, charismatic and exceptionally original Patek Philippe Nautilus, a noteworthy highlight for any advanced collection of modern icons.
