Very fine 18K rose gold wristwatch with self-winding, water resistant, perpetual calendar.
Polished case, concave bezel, fluted lugs, screwed-down transparent case back, sapphire crystal. Silvered dial with applied arrow indexes in pink gold, sub-dials for the day of the week and 24 hours at 9 o'clock, months and leap year at 3 o'clock, and days of the month at 6 o'clock. Aperture for the crescent moon phase with midnight blue moon disk at 6 o’clock, with applied rose gold dots. Dauphine hands in pink gold.

Introduced in 1985, to replace the reference 3450, the reference 3940 is one of the most iconic perpetual calendar wristwatches by Patek Philippe. Initially produced for famed retailer Chronometrie Beyer in Zürich in a limited edition of 25 pieces to celebrate its 225th anniversary, each individually numbered bearing the Beyer signature on the dial, then the reference followed three different series. The first one was produced from 1985 to 1987 in approximately 700 to 1.500 copies (the figures differ among specialists); the second series, from 1987 to 1995 in approximately 3.500 copies, and the third (and last) series from 1995 to 2007, in approximately 2.200 copies. Hence, this model, being sold on January 25th 2000, is a third series as evidenced by the Swiss sigma at the bottom of the dial which now falls in line with the outer minute track. It is fitted with the ultra-thin calibre 240, Patek Philippe’s first movement to use a micro-rotor. The wristwatch was encased predominately in yellow gold, with fewer examples in pink and white gold, and very rarely in platinum.
