Patek Philippe launched his Ellipse model in 1968 with a refined quadrangular case with rounded corners. It takes its name from the famous golden ratio, established, in the 5th century BC, by the Greek mathematician Hippasus of Metapontum. The reference 4226 was created in the mid-1970s and remained in production until the 1990s. Our lot belongs to the first of this series since it dates back to 1978, according to its extract of the archives. Actually, the particularity of this model is its lapis lazuli dial. A real technical feat, because carving a hard stone into a dial and then integrate it to the wristwatch, without breaking it, requires a great skill.

Patek Philippe présente son modèle Ellipse en 1968 : un boîtier élégant quadrangulaire aux angles arrondis. Elle tire son nom du fameux nombre d’or dont elle doit reprendre les proportions déjà établies au Ve siècle avant JC, par le mathématicien grec Hippasos de Métaponte. La référence 4226 fut lancée au milieu des années 1970 et demeura en production jusqu’aux années 1990. Notre lot appartient aux premières de cette série puisque datant de 1978, comme en atteste son extrait des archives. En l’espèce, la particularité de ce modèle est son cadran en lapis lazuli : une véritable prouesse technique, le travail de la pierre dure demandant une grande habilité à tailler puis à intégrer sans brise le cadran.
