Notes

A true symbol of the exceptional craftsmanship of Patek Philippe Geneva, the Ref. 4424/1 was produced between 1976 and 1978, made piece by piece, each distinguished from the other by the choice and shape of decoration, making each creation unique.

The set presented today is composed of a lady’s wristwatch, a necklace and a bracelet in 18K yellow gold, decorated with salmon coral, onyx and diamonds set.

The watch has an almond-shaped 18K yellow gold case, snap-on caseback, and a bezel fully paved with 60 brilliant-cut diamonds, ball set (made by Les Ateliers Réunis S.A., Geneva). Its dial is in black onyx, with faceted gold hands. It is equipped with the 16-250 calibre, with nickel-finished lever movement, 18 jewels, Gyromax balance, free-sprung regulator, 18 jewels.

Its highly decorative bracelet is consisted of marquise-shaped coral links, each centred by three brilliant-cut diamonds, interspersed with marquiseshaped onyx cabochons, each flanked by three diamonds on both sides (78 diamonds in total). The textured 18K yellow gold clasp is hallmarked Patek Philippe.

The matching necklace is also in 18K yellow gold, alternating marquise coral and onyx and cabochons, centred with a brilliant-cut diamonds set
(182 diamonds in total) and a textured gold decoration. The clasp is also hallmarked Patek Philippe.

The set is perfectly complemented by an attractive 18K yellow goldbracelet with coral, onyx and diamonds, with the same 1970’s design (63 diamonds in total).

Accompanied by its Patek Philippe’s Extract from the Archives confirming the set and the ornamental stones that compose it, the watch was made in 1978 and subsequently sold on June 14, 1978.

Preserved in very good condition, this reference 4424/1 is the only one known to date.

Similar models have done very well at auction, including a yellow gold set, Ref. 4321/2, with chrysoprase, onyx and diamonds, sold at Christie’s in 2015 for CHF 87 500.-, and more recently a yellow gold set, part of the same series, Ref. 4321/4, with malachite, onyx and diamonds, sold for CHF 138 600.- at Phillips in April 2021.

This unique set with its playful design and vivid tones, decorated with ornamental stones mixed with textured gold, sublimely embodies the 1970’s, influenced by the hippie movement and world cultures, characterizing the freedom and creativity of that decade.
