The reference 5960 occupies a significant place in modern Patek Philippe history. Unveiled in 2006, it was the manufacture’s first self-winding chronograph equipped with an entirely in-house chronograph movement, and combined this technical milestone with Patek Philippe’s patented annual calendar complication.

Its dial is unusually dynamic for the manufacture. Three apertures across the upper section display the day, date and month, while the chronograph indications are concentrated within a single large subsidiary register at 6 o’clock. A power-reserve indication and day/night display complete the information without compromising the strong symmetry of the design.
The calibre CH 28-520 IRM QA 24H combines a self-winding flyback chronograph using a column wheel and vertical clutch with an annual calendar requiring correction only once a year, at the end of February. This sophisticated architecture allowed Patek Philippe to unite two substantial complications within a relatively compact 40.5 mm case.

The platinum case gives the 5960P considerable presence while remaining characteristically understated. Dating from circa 2008, the present example belongs to the early production of a reference that marked an important transition toward Patek Philippe’s modern generation of in-house automatic chronographs.
