Ref. 1463 Production of this reference started in 1940. A similar watch is published in Patek Philippe Wristwatches, by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, Edition 1998, p. 267. Caran d'Ache Caran d'Ache is the Russian world for "pencil" and was the surname of a famous French painter, caricaturist and designer, Emmanuel Poire. He was born in Moscow in 1859 and died in Paris in 1909. He was the grandson of an officer of the Great Army and consequently liked a lot of military flourish. His first creations glorified the Napoleon epopee. IIe contributed to the newspaper Lund duo Figaro and signed his caricatures Caran d'Ache. A replica of his signature, with some modifications, became Caran d'Ache's logo for colour products. The year 1929 was a landmark for the company. Cal .in d'Ache achieved a starling international success with its IiVk ii,il, the first mechanical clutch pencil in the world entirely made out of metal. It has been a best-seller ever since. It gave the company its first opportunity of launching a line of writing instruments, engraved by hand and artfully made of gold or silver. Very early in the company, global market leadership was attained through the development of the internationally famous Prismalo and Supecolorpencils which created watercolour effects and can be dissolved with water, and with the even more successful line of Neocolorwax crayons launched in 1952
