PATEK PHILIPPE SOLAR DOME CLOCK HAND-PAINTED BY RENOWNED GRAFFITI ARTIST CRASH Patek Philippe, Geneve, Pendulette Dome, No. 872577, Ref. 1739. Made circa 1960. Very fine and rare solar-powered and electro-mechanical gilt brass and hand-painted table clock.

C. Cylindrical brass with geometric lozenge pattern on panels, entirely hand-painted with brightly multi-colored star and sphere motif, domed top, the solar cells on top of the dome. D. Silver with patterned lozenge decoration with applied brushed gilt chapter ring, further enhanced with CRASH's signature eye motif. Gilt dauphine hands. M. Ca. 17-250, solar-powered by photoelectric cell with lithium battery back-up, driving a remontoir train, winding the barrel spring, 28 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, cut bimetallic balance, self-compensating Breguet balance spring, swan-neck micrometer regulator. Dial and movement signed by Patek Philippe, case signed and dated by CRASH. Dim. 22 x 13 cm.

Notes

Born John Matos in 1961, CRASH was raised in the Bronx, New York. He adopted his nickname after accidentally crashing a computer in school, and CRASH began appearing on trains circulating all throughout New York City. In his freshman year of high school, CRASH spray painted subway cars and took photos of his graffi ti art from the street and transferred them to large-scale canvases. In 1980, he curated the ground-breaking "Graffi ti Art Success for America" at Fashion MODA, launching the graffi ti movement that remains popular through today. By 1983, he was offered his fi rst gallery show at the Sidney Janis Gallery, which eventually led to many other shows and global recognition. His works have been exhibited all over the world and can be found in many permanent collections of prestigious institutions such as The Brooklyn Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
From September 12th through October 6th, 2012, Antiquorum hosted "CRASH: Back on the Block", which featured new large scale paintings by the renowned artist as well as the exceptional hand-painted Patek Philippe dome clock. Proceeds from the sale of the dome clock will be donated to the Aids Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA) - an organization that he has long supported.
