A moon phase display is a complication that depicts the evolution of the moon as it can be seen from the earth, according to the amount of light reflected by the moon?s surface at any given period. Made between 1995 and 1998, this reference featured one of the most precise moon phase indications available at the time. Patek Philippe creates its moon discs by condensing gold, evaporated in a vacuum, on a sapphire crystal disc through a photographic mask, thus forming the shape of the moon and stars. The display carries a double hand and a tiny ?lozenge? mark on the dial at 7 o?clock can be utilized to precisely set the indicator hand at the minute of the full moon. Unlike most other moon phase watches, which advance once a day with a jump, the Ref. 5015?s moon disc is continuously driven, allowing for increased precision and a smooth transition of the hand and the disc. An annual variation of only 11 minutes and 47 seconds amounts to an error of only 1 day every 122 years and 45 days. Moon phase and power-reserve indications are combined with Cal. 240, a proven and reliable mechanism with the famous ?Gyromax? balance and a 22K gold microrotor. With its distinctive ?officier?-style case, Ref. 5015 was made in 3 colors of gold and a limited quantity in platinum.
