Robert Redford (b. August 18, 1936) IIs an Academy Award-winning American film actor, director, producer, environmentalist, and philanthropist. He received a baseball scholarship to the University of Colorado, and later studied painting at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and took classes in theatrical set design at the New York American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Redford's acting career began in New York, where an actor could work in both television and theater. His breakthrough role came in George Roy Hill's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, in which he was paired for the first time with Paul Newman (1969).
