John Pierpont Morgan Financier, born in 1837. Entered the Duncan, Sherman & Co. bank in 1857; became U.S. agent and attorney in 1860 for George Peabody & Co., bankers, London. Member of Dabney, Morgan & Co., investment securities in 1864-1871; member in 1871 of the firm of Drexel, Morgan & Co., which became J.P. Morgan & Co., the leading U.S private bankers; also J.S. Morgan & Co., London, and is today J.P. Morgan Chase. Largely occupied as financier in largest reorganizations of railways and cnsolidation of industrial properties, he made large donations to many different institutions including the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum Art and the New York Public Library. A famous collector of pictures, books, manuscripts, curiosities etc. President of Metropolitan Museum of Art. Died in 1913. He commissioned art historian G. C. Williamson to compile at least two catalogues for him, including this one, of his watch collection.
