Notes
Plojoux, Marc (1832-1922)
Marc-Abraham Plojoux was a renowned watchmaker, specialized in complicated and high precision watches and also in jewellery. He was honoured with two awards at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1878; he also won a gold medal in 1880 and another one in the Geneva National Exhibition in 1896.
He was one of earliest Swiss makers to use Paillard’s antimagnetic and rust proof balance springs (British invention patent No. 6 367 of 1886). In 1876, in Geneva, Charles-Auguste Paillard (1840-1895) turned to palladium, with which he became familiar in Brazil where he was sent by his uncle to service marine chronometers. Two of his watches fitted with such balance springs won him Honourable Mention at the Geneva Observatory Timing Contest in 1881 and 1882 respectively. His relationship with Paillard must have been close for, in both cases, the Plojoux’s chronometers were timed by Paillard.
Plojoux was established 30, Rue du Rhône, in Geneva. After his died, the business was run by his son Gustave-Marc-John Plojoux (1866-1947).
