Ref. 5500 Stainless Steel ?Air-King? Rolex, ?Oyster Perpetual, Air-King, Precision?, Ref. 5500/1002. Case No. 8154246. Made in 1985. Fine, center seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel gentleman's wristwatch with a stainless steel Oyster bracelet.

C. Three-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back and crown. D. Satiné silver with applied steel bâton indexes luminous dots and outer minute/seconds track. Luminous steel "bâton" hands. M. Cal. 1520, rhodium-plated, "oeil-deperdrix" decoration, 26 jewels, straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock-absorber, self-compensating flat balance-spring. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 34 mm. Thickness 12.5 mm.

Reference 5500 was produced from 1957 to 1990 and was marketed as the ?Air-King?, the ?Metropolitan? and as the ?Explorer, Precision?. The present lot bears two reference numbers, 5500 on the body of the watch, which refers to the specific characteristics of this watch, and Ref. 1002 in the case back, which refers to the series of references to which it belongs. The case bodies and backs were interchangeable at the factory. This watch is illustrated in ?Rolex, Collecting Wristwatches?, by Osvaldo Patrizzi, 2001 Edition, p 357.
