Notes

The present watch was sold by Rolex to Bucherer in 1971. Reference 6264 can be considered the rarest of the ?Cosmograph? references, having only been produced for two years from 1970 to 1972. This reference was available in 18K and 14K gold as well as stainless steel and was the last non-Oyster chronograph produced by Rolex. Another interesting fact regarding this reference is that it never appeared in the Rolex ?General Catalogue? however it does appear in the Rolex workshop manual. The present lot bears two reference numbers, 6264 on the body of the watch, which refers to the specific characteristics of this watch, and Ref. 6241 in the case back, which refers to an identical watch with the exception that the calibre is a Cal.722. For the biography of Paul Newman, see lot 218. This watch is illustrated in ?Rolex, Collecting Wristwatches?, by Osvaldo Patrizzi, 2001 Edition, pp. 440, 441.
