Notes

The present watch is an excellent example of a double reference case, that is, a watch with a different number in the case back to that engraved on the body of the watch between the lugs. This often occurred as a natural process during the making of the watch. The generic reference of this model is 1802 and it is usually found with a polished bezel. However, the backs and bezels of all the other models in this series ? Ref. 1803, with fluted bezel & Ref. 1804 with diamond set-bezel - are interchangeable and it was common practice within the factory to use a body of Ref. 1802 and perhaps a back of Ref. 1804. This rule also applies to the movement calibers, which can be either 1555 or 1556. For a note see lot 290. This watch is illustrated in ?Rolex, Collecting Wristwatches?, by Osvaldo Patrizzi, 2001 Edition, pp. 268-269.
