"Yankee Daytona" Rolex, ?Chronograph?, Ref. 6238. Presented to Al Downing after the NY Yankees won the American League championship in 1964. Very fine, extremely rare and historically interesting, water-resistant, stainless steel gentleman's wristwatch with round button chronograph, registers, tachometer and a stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet.

C. Three-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back and crown, polished inclined bezel. Case back engraved with the Yankees Logo and: ?1964 American League Champions Presented to Alphonso E. Downing?. D. Satiné silver with applied steel bâton indexes and luminous dots, subsidiary sunk dials for the seconds, the 12- hour and 30-minute registers, outer tachometer graduation. Luminous steel "bâton" hands. M. Cal. 72 B, rhodiumplated, 17 jewels, straight line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to 3 positions, shockabsorber, self-compensating Breguet balance spring, Microstella regulating screws. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 36 mm. Thickness: 14 mm.

Al Downing He had an impressive, 17 year career in Major League Baseball, playing primarily for the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He is most famous for giving up Hank Aaron?s 715th home run in 1974, which broke Babe Ruth?s career home run record. This Rolex watch was presented to Al Downing after the Yankees won the American League Championship in 1964; subsequently they lost the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals. It meant the end to their unprecedented dominance, which won them 9 World Series and 14 American League Championships over a 15 year period.
