Rolex Ref. 6262 - Paul Newman - Oyster Cosmograph Daytona Rolex, Genève, case No. 2553514, Ref. 6262 / 6263. Made circa 1969. Fine and rare, water-resistant, stainless steel wristwatch with steel bezel, round button chronograph, registers, tachometer and a stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet. Accompanied by a fitted box, guarantee certificate (now void), instruction manual and a service invoice from Rolex, Australia, dated February 01, 2007.

C. Three-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back and winding crown, tachometer graduation on the bezel to 200 units per hour. D. Bicolor black and silver with applied steel and black square indexes and luminous dots, outer red 1/5th seconds track, subsidiary guilloché dials for the seconds, the 12-hour and 30-minute registers. Luminous steel baton hands. M. Cal. 727, rhodium-plated, 17 jewels, straight-line lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to 3 positions, shock absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance spring, Microstella regulating screws. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 37 mm. Thickness 13 mm. Approx. overall length 200 mm.

The Rolex Daytona Ref.6262 was launched in the late 1960s and remained in production until around 1972. Featuring an updated and faster-beat version of the Valjoux Cal.72B, the new Cal.727 increased accuracy and remained the final modification to the base Cal.13?? 72A movement until it was replaced in 1987. The Ref. 6262 was available in stainless steel, 14k or 18k gold, with a metal bezel. Ref. 6264 is an identical model with the exception of its black acrylic bezel; it was produced at the same time. Both versions were sold with either a standard dial, or - at an additional cost - an "exotic" dial, now known as the Paul Newman. The Paul Newman dial was named after the famous actor who wore a white dial version similar to the present example, in his daily life in the late 1960s, and while modeling for an Italian magazine in 1969/70. In 1972 his wife Joanne Woodward gave him the Oyster cased Daytona Ref. 6263 with black dial. For an almost identical version of Ref. 6263 see next lot.
