Notes

A similar watch is illustrated on page 40 and 41 of "100 Superlative Rolex Watches" by John Goldberger. The cloisonné map of the Americas dial is particularly striking against a black background, the gold wirework or cloisons are very finely executed by the artist.
Marguerite Koch An enameler specializing in the cloisonné technique, she was one of Stern Frères' favorite artists. She also made caravelle and coat-of-arms dials for Rolex and Vacheron Constantin, as well as the famous exotic Gauguin dials for Patek Philippe. She worked for Stern from the late 40?s to the 1960?s. The Stern Frères' ledger clearly indicates that this dial was ordered in 6 pieces only by Rolex. The Stern Frères archives also include a sketch of the dial and show that several variations of the dial could be ordered; the fishes and birds cost and extra 20 Swiss francs.
