Since the creation of its famous Cosmograph Daytona, in 1963, Rolex tried endlessly to develop an automatic movement for its chronographs. Then, the manufacture called upon Zenith. From this partnership, the reference 16520 was born, in 1987. Officially launched in 1988, this was the first Daytona to adopt an automatic movement called "Zenith El Primero". The Zenith-based caliber 4030 has 36,000 oscillations per second, twice as many as the caliber 11, giving it remarkable regularity and accuracy. The reference stayed in production until 2000. The present example, being from the L series, that is to say from 1988-1989, is one of the first produced. It features a “floating dial”, meaning there is a small space between the writings « Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified » and “Cosmograph”.
