The reference 16528 occupies an important position in the history of the Cosmograph Daytona as the full yellow gold version of Rolex’s first generation of self-winding Daytona. Introduced in 1988, the reference brought together the newly redesigned Oyster case, automatic chronograph movement and the more substantial proportions that would define the modern Daytona.

Particularly striking on the present example is the black dial with diamond-set hour markers. Against the richness of the 18K yellow gold case and bracelet, the dark dial creates a powerful contrast, while the diamonds introduce a discreet jewellery element without disturbing the functional three-register chronograph layout. The engraved yellow gold tachymeter bezel completes the monochromatic precious-metal exterior.

The calibre 4030 was extensively reworked by Rolex from the Zenith El Primero architecture. Rolex modified numerous components and reduced the operating frequency to 28,800 vibrations per hour, adapting the movement to its own requirements for reliability and chronometric performance. These automatic Daytona models have consequently become known among collectors as the “Zenith Daytonas.”
The full 18K yellow gold Oyster bracelet is an essential part of the character of the 16528, giving the watch considerable presence while preserving the robust integrated appearance of the Daytona.

Dating from circa 1998, this example is further distinguished by a notably complete set of accessories, including its original fitted box, punched warranty, service papers from 2004 and 2009, chronometer hang tag, calendar card and booklets.
