Notes

A superb example of the legendary Rolex Explorer II reference 1655, affectionately nicknamed “Freccione” after its large orange 24-hour hand. Introduced in 1971, the 1655 was designed specifically for cave explorers and professionals requiring precise day/night distinction during long periods underground, embodying Rolex’s tool-watch philosophy at its peak.

This particular watch, produced circa 1978, features the desirable Mark II dial, instantly recognizable by its distinctive “Frog Foot” coronet and finely printed EXPLORER II text. The matte black dial has aged beautifully, with creamy tritium hour plots and matching hands, providing a perfectly balanced vintage patina.

The stainless steel case retains sharp proportions and strong bevels, while the engraved 24-hour fixed bezel was reprinted with the black paint.
Powered by the robust automatic Rolex calibre 1570, this movement features hacking seconds and a date function with the signature Cyclops lens.

Accompanied by its original punched guarantee papers, this example combines outstanding condition, mechanical integrity, and documented provenance, a true collector’s piece representing one of the most iconic and distinctive tool watches of the 1970s.
A remarkable and well-preserved Rolex Explorer II “Freccione” MK2, offering both technical pedigree and undeniable vintage charisma.
