Notes

The Reference 1665 Single Red Sea-Dweller occupies a position of singular importance in the entire canon of vintage Rolex collecting, standing at the precise historical junction between the experimental genesis of a concept and its commercial realisation. Produced in the transitional period of approximately 1967 to 1969, the Single Red examples preceded the better-known Double Red configuration and are today understood to represent the earliest publicly distributed expression of a watch that would go on to define deep-saturation diving for professional use across the following decades. Within this already restricted family, the designation Prototype carries a weight of horological significance that requires no embellishment: these are watches that predate the stabilisation of the production specification, bearing dial and case details that were subsequently revised before the reference reached its definitive commercial form, and whose existence documents the process by which Rolex arrived at one of its most technically ambitious wristwatches.

The serial number 1,759,659, dating this example to approximately 1967–1968 and placing it at the very earliest stratum of Sea-Dweller production, presents itself in entirely original, unrestored condition, its surface having evolved over more than half a century into the rich, complex patina that the collecting community describes as: untouched, unmolested, and carrying within its aged lacquer a documentary authenticity that formal certification alone cannot confer. The text layout, the particular typography of the Single Red "SEA-DWELLER" inscription, and the depth rating indication of 500 metres, later revised on subsequent references, combine to make the dial the primary site of historical interest on any example of this variant, and the condition of the present dial, homogeneous and naturally aged without loss of definition or legibility, represents the standard against which other examples of the reference are measured. The case retains its original proportions and surface integrity consistent with a watch preserved rather than worn hard, the lugs showing the gentle softening of age rather than the aggressive wear that frequently compromises examples of this period. The convergence of prototype status, Single Red typography, first-generation serial number and an entirely original dial in unrestored condition renders this example one of the most historically significant pieces of vintage Rolex to appear on the market in recent memory, and a reference point for the serious student of the manufacturer's technical and aesthetic evolution during its most consequential decade.
