Notes

The present Submariner Date belongs to the highly desirable early transitional generation of reference 16800 examples featuring the matte tritium dial configuration. Introduced at the beginning of the 1980s, the reference represented a major evolution within the Submariner lineage through the introduction of the Rolex calibre 3035 with quick-set date functionality while preserving many of the visual characteristics associated with earlier vintage production. Particularly noteworthy is the engraved caseback “Jeux Olympiques Tallinn 1980 R. Perret”, potentially linking the watch to the Tallinn Olympic events held in conjunction with the Moscow Games. Combining strong vintage aesthetics, early transitional characteristics and unusual historical interest, the present watch possesses significant collector appeal.
