In 1979 the ref. 1680 was replaced by the new Rolex Submariner ref. 16800, equipped with the sapphire crystal and the new movement cal. 3035 with quick release of the date. For the first time, the rotating bezel is unidirectional, thus ensuring greater safety in case of accidental movements. At the beginning the dial was matte with “pallettoni” indexes. It was replaced around the mid-1980s with the modern “bicchierini” dial version.
