The caseback is engraved " William L. Pence, ASN 7000211, US Air Force". William Spence (1919-1944) was a US Force Second Lieutenant based at the 114th AAF base unit in Asheville, North Carolina. During his service he was awarded World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Army Presidential Unit Citation and the Army Good Conduct Medal. He was on the crew of B-24E Liberator #42-7256 when they crashed into Green Knob mountain near Ashville, North Carolina. They had been stationed at Chatham Field, Georgia. The entire crew of ten men were killed.
