Notes

The present Rolex Tropical reference 3333 represents an exceptionally rare example of the brand’s early large-diameter wristwatches, created during a formative period spanning the 1930s and 1940s when Rolex was experimenting with expanded case sizes and dial architectures prior to its postwar consolidation under the Oyster concept. Defined by its oversized 40 mm stainless-steel case, refined stepped bezel and Art Deco–inspired sector dial layout, the watch embodies the exploratory spirit and aesthetic sophistication that characterized Rolex’s pre-Professional era.

The dial, exhibiting a rich and evenly matured tropical patina, bears the Tropical designation and features a striking subsidiary seconds register at six o’clock. Blued hands provide a vivid counterpoint to the dial’s warm, naturally aged surface, creating a composition that is both historically resonant and visually compelling. The generous case proportions, far larger than those typically produced by Rolex at the time, lend the watch a presence and modernity that anticipate the stylistic transitions of the 1940s.

Powered by a manually wound movement and preserved in remarkable condition for its age, the present example offers collectors a rare opportunity to engage with one of the most elusive and artistically distinctive Rolex wristwatches of the period. Its combination of rarity, large format and original tropical dial surface makes it a connoisseur’s piece of the highest order and a particularly desirable addition to any important collection of early Rolex timepieces.
