Notes

The first Rolex Ref. 5512 Submariner with square type crown guards debuted in 1959. These protective shoulders placed around the crown, or so-called ‘square guard’ was originally invented for deep sea diving, as to shield the crown from water and damage, which was then an important invention for dive watches. This design only lasted for one year, believed only around 100 examples were produced and was soon replaced by its successor, the second generation of Ref. 5512, so-called ‘Eagle Beak’, which make ‘Square Guard’ a very much sought-after piece for collection.
The current lot comes in a case in mint condition, and a matching tropical dial from the same period which shows alluring chocolate colour.
