Notes

Reference 6238, often referred to as the "Pre-Daytona," was produced in stainless steel and in 14K and 18K gold. It was published for the first time in the Rolex catalogue for the Italian Market in 1964 and remained there until 1968. While the gold versions are the rarest in terms of production numbers, a vast majority of the stainless steel models were produced featuring a silver dial. Black dial versions are among the most attractive and within that category there are 2 further types of black dials, one with silver writing and the most desirable with gilt color writing such as this example. The black gilt dials are also found with glossy or matt dials and this particular example has been maintained in excellent condition showing no scratches or wear, original matching hands to the lume plots and a nice strong case. A truly beautiful example of a gilt matt black dial 6238.
