Notes

The Reference 6264 represents the final and most accomplished expression of the manually wound Cosmograph Daytona family, produced for a brief window between approximately 1969 and 1972 before the mechanical architecture of the Daytona was entirely reconceived. Powered by the Calibre 727, a modified Valjoux 72 with column wheel and cased in the now-iconic stepped bezel format with engraved tachymeter scale, it is technically and aesthetically the apotheosis of the manually wound Daytona lineage.

The present example belongs to the celebrated "Paul Newman" dial variant, a designation that has become shorthand in the horological community for the exotic, square-cornered subsidiary dial configuration first encountered on American markets in the late 1960s, and whose association with the actor and racing driver Paul Newman elevated it from a commercial curiosity to one of the most coveted objects in the history of wristwatch collecting. The "Panda" colorway white dial with black registers is among the most visually compelling of the Newman variants, its graphic contrast lending the dial an immediacy that has lost none of its force across half a century.

Biography

One of the rarest Cosmograph models, reference 6264 was produced for a few years only in the early 1970s. Together with reference 6262, it was the last Rolex chronograph watch to be fitted with pump pushers. It is understood that only some 1,700 examples in stainless steel were ever made of reference 6264. Along with the rarity of the model, the present watch is also eye catching due to the “Paul Newman PANDA” dial.
