The MILGAUSS model was introduced in 1954, primarily created for people working on scientific experiments or in power stations who required watches that remained accurate when working in high magnetic environment. The watch's distinctive name derives from the French word 'Mille', meaning thousand, and 'Gauss', which is a measurement of magnetic induction. Even prior to this time, watchmakers were aware of the adverse affect magnetic fields have on the inner workings of a watch. A normal watch will start to lose accuracy at 60 oersted and cease to function at around 100 oersted. Rolex being the brand synonymous with pushing the envelope of timekeeping in extreme conditions, it was a perfect opportunity to tackle this challenge which became especially relevant in this era when peaceful use of nuclear energy gained momentum in the scientific world. Although the premise of the watch was a horological breakthrough, since only a small group of people required such special anti-magnetic features for their watches, the Milgauss remained mostly utilized in a limited professional market. Therefore vintage Milgauss models never reached the popularity among ordinary users. Since there were not many produced, the earlier models such as this example, have become one of the rarest vintage designs sought after by Rolex collectors today. After several iterations of the model, it was was finally withdrawn from the Rolex catalog in 1988, only available as a special order piece for a short time after it had been discontinued. In 2007, Rolex reintroduced the updated and evolved Milgauss; now targeting the medical imaging community. At the time of its initial launch in 1954, it was available under the references 6541 and 6543 with either a graduated revolving bezel or a fixed smooth bezel. In order to maximize the anti-magnetic feature, several parts inside the movement were specifically made with anti-magnetic alloys. It also uniquely featured an iron anti-magnetic cap over its movement to shield from dangerous exposure, enabling the watch to remain accurate even over 1000 oersted (its guaranteed limit). Not only did the watch function perfectly under such condition, but it also remained accurate at 5000 oersted. Its superior anti-magnetic property was evident; even residual magnetism from such high level of exposure would not affect its accuracy. This present lot showcases the glorious first generation of the Milgauss 6541 featuring the black honeycomb dial, luminous dots, the infamous and rare thunderbolt seconds hand and the "pink" Milgauss writing, (the original bezel was most likely replaced at some point in the late 60's or early 70's.) First time at auction and from the family of the original owner, it has been preserved in virtually unworn state for past several decades - A great addition to the rare Rolex sports family.
