Notes
The present watch is an outstanding example of the legendary Rolex GMT-Master reference 6542, crafted entirely in 18K yellow gold and dating from 1959, the final production year of this historic reference. Introduced in 1954 and developed in collaboration with Pan American Airways, the 6542 was Rolex’s first GMT-Master, a pioneering timepiece that defined the dual-time wristwatch for the modern jet age.
This particular example is distinguished by its stunning orange-patinated dial, whose original glossy brown surface has aged into a rich and luminous shade of burnt orange. The gilt printing remains perfectly legible, while the luminous hour markers and matching hands have developed a warm creamy tone, creating a superbly harmonious vintage appearance. The Bakelite bezel insert, displaying the signature 24-hour scale, is beautifully preserved with its translucent finish and deep red-brown hue, a hallmark feature of the earliest GMT-Master models, and a rarity today due to the fragile nature of the material.
The 18K yellow gold case retains its crisp edges and well-defined proportions, showcasing the elegance and robust design language that would become a cornerstone of Rolex’s professional line. Inside beats the automatic calibre 1066 with butterly rotor, Rolex’s first chronometer-grade self-winding movement, a technical milestone in the brand’s history.
The watch is accompanied by both an original Rolex leather strap and an Oyster riveted gold bracelet (with rivets requiring replacement), offering two authentic and period-correct configurations.
A truly superb and historically significant example of the Rolex GMT-Master reference 6542, combining elegance, rarity, and remarkable patina. With its striking orange dial, Bakelite red bezel, this 1959 gold GMT-Master stands as one of the most charismatic and collectible examples of the reference, a true connoisseur’s masterpiece.
