Silver (0.900), pink gold and niello, open-face, keyless-winding, round-shaped, pocket watch, with subsidiary seconds at 6 and one horological complication:
· Quarter-repeater on two steel gongs by two hammers (activated by the slide located on the case-band at 3 o’clock)

Cover engraved and black niello-work enamelled in champlevé with decoration of friezes and ornaments, with, in the centre, an escutcheon

White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals; gilded metal hands.

Niello

Product containing lead, copper, silver, sulphur and salt ammoniac.

Niello-work consists in preparing, generally on a silver case (rarely on gold), an engraved or stamped ornament about 0.4 mm. deep. The compound is then deposited in paste form in the hollows of the pattern, and the case is fired (blowpipe or enameller’s furnace); the niello melts and combined with the metal. The excess niello is removed with a file, then the case is smoothed and polished.

Polished niello cases were in fashion at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.
