Notes

Elasticity

Property of certain substances which, when distorted, resume their original shape as soon as the distorting force ceases to act. The distorting force may act by pulling, compression, bending or twisting. The elasticity of springs depends on the nature of the metal and the treatments it has undergone.

Shore Scleroscope

The Shore Scleroscope measures hardness in terms of the elasticity of the material. A diamond-tipped hammer in a graduated glass tube is allowed to fall from a known height on the specimen to be tested, and the hardness number depends on the height to which the hammer rebounds; the harder the material, the higher the rebound.

The device was invented in 1907 and patented under the American invention patent No. 962 790, delivered on June 28, 1910 (application filed, November 26, 1907), to A. F. Shore, owner of the Shore Instruments Manufacturing Company in Jamaica, New York.
