Mets). Jim Kaat held the previous record, going 7 years between 20-win seasons (25-13 in 1996 and 21-12 in 1974... went 96 consecutive starts without back-to-back losses before losing on 9/13 vs. Toronto and 9/19 at Baltimore-only 2 pitchers this century have had longer or equal streaks (Firpo Marberry 100, Scott McGregor, 96)... went 0-1 with a no decision, allowing 16 earned runs in 9.2IP (14.89 ERA) in his first two starts of the season. David Cone was the recipient of the 1998 "New York Athlete of The Year " for his outstanding work on and off the field. Founded in 1996 by David Cone, the Foundation assists charitable organizations and educational programs throughout the country, especially as they relate to children. Cone has spearheaded several programs that have given the Foundation the chance to grow by donating his off-the-field public appearance and endorsement fees. Cone also set-up an autograph by mail program that gives fans access to get his autograph by making a small contribution. During the season, Cone has hosted numerous underprivileged and sick children to Yankee Stadium to see a game and has remained true friends with many of them on their road to recovery. Many of those children met Cone during his several unannounced visits to the pediatric ward at local hospitals during the holiday season. Last summer, The David Cone Charity Softball tournament was held in Central Park with 14 corporate teams competing in a clay long tournament to benefit Baseball Assistance Team (BAT), The City Park Foundation, The Central Park Conservancy and The Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. Two events took place during 1998 that were inaugural events during 1997 season that benefited the Children' s Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. The David Cone Kid's Clinic gave children, who were sponsored with a donation to the foundation, a lesson from the Yankees coaches and players on the field at Yankee Stadium. A wine tasting event, held last year at David and Lynn Cone's home, was held this year in New York City as a Cone Anniversary Party and Sports Memorabilia Auction. The David Cone Foundation has supported several charities including, but not limited to: The Arthritis Foundation, The Mickey Mantle Foundation, AHRC, The Leukemia Society of America, the Four Foundation, The LaBelle Foundation and ALS. Cone has also supplied uniforms and equipment to a Ban Johnson baseball team in Kansas City and ProKids Baseball Instructional Camps in Tampa.
