Notes

Ulysse Nardin, “Moonstruck”

Seventeen years after the completion of the historic astronomical “Trilogy of Time” Ulysse Nardin has developed a new astronomically revolutionary timepiece, imbued with the DNA of Mr. Ludwig Oechslin.

Dr. Ludwig Oechslin’s concept is based on the system of Sun, Earth and Moon, with in the centre a scientifically accurate representation of the phases of the moon, as well as the influence of lunar and solar gravitation, which results in the ebb and flow of the tides.

By combining the relative movement of two discs into a single dial, the indication of the moon phases is so accurate that more than 100 000 years will have to pass before it indicates a full moon rather than a new moon (or vice versa). The “Moonstruck” simulates the rotation of the Moon around the Earth, as well as the apparent movement of the Sun around the globe. The latter is represented by a third disc, which rotates every 24 hours. This makes it possible to determine the current phase of the Moon with respect to any location in the world.

The “Moonstruck” also indicates the global dynamics of the tides, which depend on the influences of lunar and solar gravitation. This revolutionary mechanical timepiece illustrates the current situation of the tides as well as the trend in relation to specific coastlines or oceans. The accumulated influences of the Moon and Sun resulting in spring tides are also clearly readable.

The “Moonstruck” is a very practical travel “companion”. It features a calendar hand and a quick time zone change device to move the hour hand forward or backward to a different time by instantly pressing the plus (+) and minus (-) pushers at 8 and 10 o’clock.

The “Moonstruck” is a creation entirely developed and designed within the Ulysse Nardin manufacture. The calibre UN 106 has a silicon escapement and balance spring produced according to the latest technological advances in this field.

The “Moonstruck” was available in a limited edition of 500 pieces in 18K “red” pink gold and 500 pieces in platinum.

The Swiss retail price was CHF 113 000.-
