Notes
Universal, royal presentation watch for Saudi Arabia This watch is part of a limited edition especially made for Abdulaziz ibn Abdul Rahman ibn Faisal ibn Turki ibn Abdullah ibn Muhammad Al Saud (1875-1953), usually known within the Arab world as Abdulaziz and in the West as Ibn Saud, first monarch and founder of Saudi Arabia (1932-1953), the "third Saudi state", and his son Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (1902-1969), King of Saudi Arabia (1953-1964). The dial features partial hour indicators in Arabic script, with the inscriptions "Saoud Ibn Abdul Aziz" at twelve o'clock and "Jezira el Arabia" at six o'clock (Jezira meaning island in Arabic). The enamel scene is brightly coloured; the Arabian Peninsula rendered in a deep emerald polychrome enamel contrasting with the realistic turquoise blue waters of the surrounding Red Sea, Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf and Gulf of Aden. The hour markers and celebratory inscriptions are set on a pink gold ring surrounding the enamel scene. Two small enamel motifs represent Saudi Arabia; one, the palm tree and crossed swords that is the national emblem of Saudi Arabia adopted in 1950, and the other a mosque, most likely one of the three oldest and most historically important mosques located in Medina. There are unfortunately no archives for Jean Singer's production after a major fire completely destroyed the Genevan factory on winter 1955. At the same period this watch was produced, Universal Genève made watches with enamel dials representing Egypt, India as well as Saudi Arabia. Presentation Watch A presentation watch is a watch offered by, or on its behalf, by a ruler / leader (Emperor, King, President, Prime Minister, Company Director, etc.) as an acknowledgment or thanks to a third person.
