Notes

The present piece is unusual for its mechanism, featuring a pull-string mechanism. It was designed to be suspended by its ring from the wearer’s clothing, thereby recording each step taken. The outer scale indicates up to 100 steps, the intermediate scale up to 6,000 steps, and the inner scale the cumulative distance covered, up to 360,000 steps. A “mille” was a traditional unit of measurement corresponding to one thousand steps.
