ABD-UL-MEJID / ABDULMECID SULTAN OF THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE POCKET WATCH YELLOW GOLD Swiss, "Demi-Chronometre", No. 36405. Made for the Turkish market, circa 1850. Very fine and very rare, 18K gold and painted on enamel hunting cased pocket watch.

Four-body, foliate engraved, the front cover with a finely painted on enamel portrait of Sultan Abd-ul-Mejid (1823-1861) against an engine-turned background, the back cover decorated with an engraved and black enamel view of the Hagia Sophia mosque in Constantinople. Hinged gold cuvette with engine-turned border. White enamel with radial Islamic numerals, outer minute track. Gold hands with pierced black tips. Matte gilt, unusual caliber with pierced scroll backplate, jeweled to the third, lateral lever escapement with curled counterpoise, cut bimetallic compensation balance, flat balance spring, index regulator. Cuvette engraved "Demi Chronometre".
