WATCH FOR THE TURKISH MARKET "GATEWAY TO THE ORIENT" GOLD & ENAMEL Swiss, case No. 28290. Made for the Turkish market, circa 1835. Very fine and very rare, 18K gold and painted on enamel pocket watch decorated with a map of Turkey and the bordering countries.

Four-body, the bezel, band, pendant and bow decorated with red and white champlevé enamel in a repeated pattern, the hinged and sprung back cover decorated with a finely painted on enamel map of Turkey, Greece and Romania, the Black Sea and Mediterranean Sea and bordering countries, the border decorated to match the bezel. Hinged gold cuvette. White enamel with radial Islamic numerals, outer minute track. Gold Breguet hands. 40 mm., matte gilt, Lepine caliber, 8 jewels, cylinder escapement, plain three-arm gilt balance, blued steel flat balance spring, index regulator. Dial with Arabic inscription, case numbered.
