Notes

“Etui-à-tablette”
The fashion of these small étuis (cases) develops throughout the 18th century. These small flat cases normally contain a writing kit (tow-leaved ivory tablets with gold rivet, a pencil and often a pair of scissors and a two-blade penknife) to write down appointments. These cases are the ancestors of the carnets-de-bal (notebooks) that will develop during the 19th century.
The inscription “Souvenir d’amitié” (Souvenir of Friendship) underlines the sentimental value of such gifts.
