This object is made after a brothel table lantern (the lantern holder with its red opaline is lost and replaced by a glass-ball-form watch).

On the stem, a small sign bearing the inscription “Avis / Les maires de Beaune et de Nuits font savoir que les lanternes ne seront pas allumées les soirs où l’on verra la lune” (Notice [to the population] / The mayors of Beaune and Nuits[-Saint-Georges in the Burgundy region] wish to make it known that the lanterns will not be lit on nights when the moon is visible).

Originally, this kind of object representing a lantern indicated to passing travellers, according to the lighting, whether the brothel was open or not.
