Notes

Flühli glass

“Flühli glass” is a generic term – named after a municipality in the district of Lucerne – for the handmade production of enamelled glassware in central Switzerland between the first quarter of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The iconography of the enamelled decorations, sometimes accompanied by inscriptions, illustrates religious, gallant or even Bacchic subjects.

In the 18th century, many itinerant workshops were active in central Europe. The settlement of the Siegwart brothers – originally from the Black Forest – in the Entlebuch in 1723 marked a turning point in the history of Swiss glass. It marked the beginning of the establishment of several similar companies in the region. The homogeneity of their production makes it quite difficult to assign them to a particular region.
