Notes

Jaquemarts and the Tradition of Timepieces:

Jaquemarts have a rich tradition, dating back to at least the late 17th century when they were mentioned in the first edition of the French National Academy's dictionary in 1694. The dictionary defines Jaquemarts as "figures made of solid or cast iron representing a man in arms, which is usually put up on top of a (clock) tower to strike the hours with a hammer onto the bell of the clock."

These intricate figures became a notable feature on clock towers, adding both functional and decorative elements to timekeeping. The mechanized Jaquemarts would strike the hours audibly, providing a visual and auditory spectacle for those in the vicinity.

The tradition of incorporating miniature versions of Jaquemarts into watches continued into the 19th century and remains popular today. Watches adorned with these clock tower "men in arms" evoke a sense of historical charm and mechanical ingenuity. The fascination with Jaquemarts endures, especially when coupled with additional complications, such as concealed erotic automata, as seen in the present example.

The inclusion of an erotic automaton adds an extra layer of intrigue and sophistication to these timepieces. Despite the passage of time, the allure of Jaquemarts, with their historical significance and captivating mechanisms, continues to captivate enthusiasts, making them as sought after today as they were in the 19th century.
