Vacheron & Constantin, Genève, No. 390198, case No. 253238, completed in December 1927, sold on 23 January 1928 to Mr. Milan T. Stefanovitch, Belgrade, for H. M. Alexandre 1er, King of Yougoslavia. Fine 18 ct. gold and enamel hunting cased, keyless presentation watch.

C. Four body, massive, "demi-bassine", polished, the cover with the champleve enamelled coat of arms of the King, the back engraved with a dedication in cyrillic. Gold cuvette. D. Mat gold with applied gold Breguet numerals and sunk subsidiary seconds. Gold "cathédrales" hands. M. 19-, gilt brass, 15 jewels, straight lune lever escapement, cut bimetallic balance, Breguet balance spring with swan neck micrometric index. Signed on the dial, case and movement. In very good condition. Diam. 52 mm.

KARAGJORGEVIC 4 December, 1888 - 9 October, 1934 Alexander Karagjorgevic was bora in Cettigue on December 4, 1888. He was the second son of Prince Pietro Karagjorgevic who was later to become King of Serbia. Alexander became heir to the throne in 1909 when his older brother renounced his right to succession. Alexander I died on October 9, 1934, at the age of 46. He was murdered in Marseilles by a Yugoslavian conspirator named Petrus Kaleman. The French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Barthou, and General Georges were also seriously wounded. The assassin, wounded by sabre cuts from an officer of the Royal suite and beaten by the outraged crowd, died in the local police station. There was an intense emotional reaction throughout the world to the King's assassination. Unanimously King Alexander I is saluted as a great figure of contemporary history and as a noble martyr. He bas become a legendary figure in the history of his country fulfilling the mythic role of the valorous hero. Although very young, Alexander was gloriously successful during the two Balkan wars and displayed heroic conduct as Supreme Commander of the Serbian Army during World War I. On December 1, 1918, in the aftermath of his victory during Wolrs War I, alexander was named Regent of the Kingdoms of Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. Following the death of his father on August 17, 1921, he succeeded to the throne to become King Alexander I. In Belgrade in 1922 he married the Princess Maria (daughter of Ferdinand and Marie of Roumania) with whom he had three children, Prince Pietro, who would succeed him as Pietro II, Prince Tanislov and Prince Andrea. Alexander I had a passion for wristwatches and pocket watches. He had a special fondness for wristwatches and built a considerable collection, several of which are well-known having been sold by some of the world's leading auction bouses.
